YouTube vs Dailymotion

YouTube has the largest database ever as almost everyone uses it. The only two competitors I know are Dailymotion and Vimeo. I prefer Dailymotion though. Because I live aboard, I mainly use such services to share my own videos with family and friends…

YouTube

  • Unfortunately, Google stopped its video editor as no one is using it. It was very handy and free.
  • Copyright issues. Google is very strictly watching over copyrights. A music coming from the car’s radio could cause the video to be marked as violation!
  • I wish they kept the connection with contacts. That’s, ability to share a movie with a specific contact where no one else can see it. I think they are heading into restoring this back in someway.
  • If you’re into public videos, YouTube has the largest database and users. Thus, getting your movie noticed is not as easy as in Dailymotion or Vimeo. Some might argue about this in the opposite direction!
  • If you want to download your own videos, they will be at lower quality than the original uploaded.
  • read more about moving YouTube channel.

Dailymotion

  • It’s not Google’s.
  • Breaching of copyrights is not allowed here too. However, I think copyrights’ claims are less in comparing to YouTube.
  • Sometimes, they have issues with quality of the uploaded videos. I think they solved that in their latest update.
  • Dailymotion offers monetizing options as in YouTube.
  • I hate the upload limits here. 2hrs-length of upload per 24 hrs. However, the quota is increasing over time.

Give Dailymotion a try; you won’t regret it.

I haven’t talked about Vimeo here because it’s mostly not free. Rather, I believe it’s expensive. Additionally, I never liked their mobile app.

Do you use video services other than YouTube? Do you use such services for sharing your own videos privately with family and friends?

Thank you for this information. I wasn’t aware of Vimeo or Dailymotion until your post.

You’re most welcome, Franci. Personally, Dailymotion is a real alternative for YouTube. As it’s still growing in the market, I believe there are a lot of opportunities there.

        Thank you for the info.

Hi Mohamad, I use only YouTube. It was the most well known and suited my needs when I was looking for a platform at the beginning of the year. I will probably stay with it; I don’t really have any ‘issues’ with it for now. 🙂

Thank you very much, Carolyn. YouTube is a mature service that is managed by a giant. You won’t (mostly) face issues except for the ones I mentioned above and I think they are manageable. If you feel comfortable with a service, there is no need to change it. However, giving such things a try won’t harm any…

      1. Carolyn Page Avatar

I’ll keep that in mind… Thank You, Mohamad.. 🙂

        You’re most welcome, Carolyn 🙂

Hi everyone, I’m different mostly because I don’t have a cell phone and have only been on youtube once and that was only because the search I was doing took me there. These other Apps you mention never heard of them.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you, Crystal. I understand… I’m not so much into watching online. However, I just upload my videos there to share with my family and friend. That is 90% of my use for such services…

you seem like a smart guy and you know computers, how do you transfer word documents into another type of document and you don’t need office to open but could open it with photos. The place that transferred my computer put some photos in word. please help if you can.

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Hi, Crystal. I’ll be more glad to help you. I understand that you have some documents in MS Word type but you don’t have MS Office app installed to your device. You can upload them to OneDrive (you should have Microsoft account). You can open them there in Online MS Office. It’s free cloud service where can do all things you do on MS Office but through a browser. The other option is upload them Google Drive (you should have Google account) and you can open them there in Google Document format.

      3. Crystal Stewart Avatar

Can I transfer/convert out of Word? If so, How can I transfer/convert out of Microsoft word?

      4. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

I don’t think there is a direct way to convert into pic, Crystal. In general, you can choose a different format to save as in MS Word. For example, you can save the file as html/web and extract the picture then; or you can copy the pictures and paste in some photo editing software.

Relatively, Googe documents offers the option to transfer into Google’s docs format. I’m not sure about Libre Office or Apache OpenOffice.

      5. Crystal Stewart Avatar

So it doesn’t have to be opened with office?

      6. Crystal Stewart Avatar

Just wondered because a lot of them come up with try office, buy office and 1 other option.

      7. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Let me know, Crystal, if you still need further assistance here

      8. Crystal Stewart Avatar

I am trying office for free but no other options come up. Why?

      9. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Sorry for delay, Crystal. I’m sorry I didn’t understand your question. Hope things are solved. Otherwise, please contact me directly to assist you in this 🙂

      10. Crystal Stewart Avatar

Let me try to explain. Sometimes when you go to open word docs they give you other options how you want to open the document. it doesn’t here. Why?

      11. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

I understand that you are opening the docs on Windows desktop not online. Thus, it shoud open all files with .docx extension in MS Word

      12. Crystal Stewart Avatar

maybe it will once I get rid of office.

I’ve heard of Vimeo, but I only use YouTube. Indeed, I have noticed that they are getting stricter on copyright, taking down a lot of videos. I have never made my own video to upload, but would love to learn how someday. YouTube is great for finding almost any kind of content one can imagine though! 🙂

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Yes, Melissa. YouTube is still the best regarding the size of their database. I understand their point of view regarding copyrights. However, it’s annoying sometimes when you’re uploading your own videos with no intention to breach copyrights!

  5. Joanna Lynn Avatar

I hadn’t heard of Daily Motion. I was familiar with Vimeo. Good information shared.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

You’re most welcome Joanna… Give Daily Motion a try, hopefully you won’t regret it especially if you uploading your own videos

  6. Marina Aagaard Avatar

Thank you for this sharing information. Knew Vimeo, good quality. Did not know of Daily Motion.
I upload videos with YouTube, mainly exercise videos in Danish and in English (text), for public use (for friends, lecture participants and students). I find the service and libraries work well.
The fact that YouTube is owned by Google is important for public videos; more easily found.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

One won’t go wrong with YouTube for sure. Thanks for sharing your experience about managing videos there, Marina. Glad you’re having good experience. Yes, some might argue that being large, YouTube is better and same argue the opposite.

P.S., you have great channel on YouTube. My wife has enjoyed it a lot 😉

You commented, ” YouTube is a mature service that is managed by a giant. ”
And that ‘giant’ is a ‘control freak’ which I have little desire for.
My opinion: YouTube is flagging and taking down videos and sites for the most ridiculous reasons! They ‘bully’ people into submission! This year they took down a very old informational site, one that always bent over backwards to ‘comply’ with YouTube regulations. The site spoke too much ‘truth’ for the likes of YouTube.
Vimeo I was aware of….have used….am not impressed with.
Thank you for the intro to Dailymotion. Will check it out soonly.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Wow, Ren. Thank you very much for the information. Honestly, I haven’t had big issues with YouTube. But my motto is not to have all eggs in one basket… I’m sorry to hear this about the channel. Unfortunately, if they talked about it, others will consider them biased!

I wanna download some background music on Youtube for free, what can I do? Thanks for reply!

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you, Swan. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried this before so I’m not sure if I can answer your query… However, I always see extensions on Firefox and Chrome relate to this subject

      1. Swan Hu Avatar

Thank you as same! I have solved my problem. An very great site:http://freemusicdownloads.world/, can download background music on Youtube. Share with you, my friend.

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Glad you were able to solve it. Thank you, Swan, very much for the information.
