Back to WordPress

wordpress_logoIn a previous post, I wrote how I started my personal website with WordPress.com then moved to Blogger and ended up with my own site (ASP) and hosting (at Web Wiz). Now, after almost a year, I’m moving back to WordPress.com

(see my post about this experience)

This is an announcement rather than a real article.

Running your own site, hosting, and programming means a lot of freedom. It’s fun and real achievement. However, with a personal website, I found that it’s time consuming to manage my own site and to keep its programming/plugins up to date. After all, this is a non-profit site. Revenue generated from advertising on site isn’t that big – see my post where I talked about Google AdSense and its alternatives.

I chose to get back to WordPress.com for many reasons:

WordPress.org isn’t my type and won’t be. I still prefer programming with ASP(.net). Additionally, it won’t be different in terms of burden and time to keep the software and plugins up to date.

Here, you only need to have your own domain and to do some CSS customizing (see my post about how I designed the CSS template this way). On other hand, the package I chose costs almost the same. Unfortunately, I lost some of my articles’ comments as I was using Disqus commenting system. There was no way to import them here but I managed to import some manually. The URLs of pages are also different now.

Thank you. Change decisions are not easy after all

So…we’re supposed to do updates with our WordPress site? I thought they took care of that for you!

    1. mohamadkarbi Avatar

Thank you. They did for WordPress.com. For WordPress.org, as far as I know, security update is an automatic process. Major ones still need some work. Though, it’s easier nowadays comparing to the time when I first looked into it.

Now I’ll have to see whether I am dot org or dot com. (On phone, even more limited tech-wise than usual!)

      2. mohamadkarbi Avatar

@kirizar your site is dot com and it’s a nice one. Please check this link for more details about the difference: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Aww, thank you for presuming (incorrectly) that I would understand anything but the most simplistic explanations regarding technology. I’m still pretty vague on what a widget is and lost as to how to incorporate one to my site without step-by-step instructions! I appreciate the thought though!

You’re welcome. I know it’s not easy. You’re doing great on your website though. I’ll be visiting again for sure and reading more. Thank you…

I was able to read the link you sent. I now know for certain, I will never be a dot org. I am not dot org material. Too much actual work and talent required.

I’ve been through a similar process, from WordPress.com to WordPress.org and back again. This time around I’ve been back with .com for a shade over five years.

Wow, I’m admiring your neat website. I’m thinking that with the ability to build such a neat & responsive site, why should one bother to suffer with .org? Saving time for writing which is more important… Thank you for sharing your experience.

I have to ask , since I been through the same. When you changed your plan from free to let’s say business plan , did the WordPress.com disappeared ? And did you have more freedom in your design ?

    1. mohamadkarbi Avatar

Hi Zeina, my plan is Premium. Comparing to Personal plan that is ads-free with custom domain, Premium plan provides more storage in addition to possibility of editing the site’s CSS. For me, this is a lot of freedom – You may check this post: https://mohamadkarbi.com/css-customizing-for-wordpress . However, to remove the Powered by WordPress logo, you must have Business plan. If you want more freedom in the design and components, you might need to consider moving to dot org WordPress which requires third- party hosting.

I find it to stressful to have your own hosting and I am not the super smart one when it comes to these things 🙆🏼

      2. mohamadkarbi Avatar

@thezeinadiary I understand your point. After years with being online through my other websites, I came into a conclusion that if a website isn’t generating enough returns (I prefer the word: compensation), it might be better to have it managed in simple way… Good luck in your choice…

Thank you , you too 😀
