WordPress – Ethical Dilemma

WordPress Ethical Dilemma

If you have 20 posts to like or comment, you cannot do them all within 5 minutes. If you could, your account will be blocked for spamming! WordPress Ethical Dilemma: As their numbers and posts are increasing over time, how do you usually keep up with friends on WordPress?

WordPress Ethical Dilemma: Summary of comments:

Reading is a must

Yet many emphasized the importance of the title, most comments were about reading a post is a must. A like or a comment should be only given to worthy posts. Relatively, some felt bad about receiving a lot of likes from the same person in a short time; they considered recording likes without reading a disrespect.

Time Management

Most agreed that reading takes time that is not always available. Many talked about their philosophy in following others and how to manage updates. First, a group of important users where importance is based on the topics of interest or on users who contribute to our blogs regularly. Second, following less. Third, utilizing the time of waiting in more reading or contributing. Relatively, they referred to the bad system of WordPress in keeping up with friends; a lot could be missed if one is absent for a while. Are weekly digests enough? Or should we have a system similar to Facebook where top posts are listed first?

Support Others

On other hand, some argued that likes are a way of supporting friends. After all, we trust some friends and their posts but we lack the time – We’re saying that we’re here and haven’t forgotten about you.

Favorite Tool

Some referred to something else. Likes are favorite tool. Thus, they’re pinning posts for later reading. Probably, they’ve already read them through emails so they’re doing all the likes at once.

WordPress Ethical Dilemma

Almost all declined the existence of persons with ability of fast skimming or predicting. There was some talking about awards posts and the importance of short posts in blogging world. What about achievement posts or one-picture with no words posts? Posts with different languages? What about bloggers posting many posts per day? What about people who are seeking likes only? (technically speaking, the number of likes has no effect)?

If this resonated with you, let’s stay in touch. No spam.

Such a delicate question, With the increase in follower list. And people liking and comment upon it.

If you get 100 people liking your post.

It’s way difficult to read 100 post and liking it their post didn’t do the justice.

I guess the best practice might be. Those who have fewer follower list. Support them fully in anyway possible. And also do the maximum for those who are regular and be in touch with you often.

The rest will go up and down

Thank you Shahzad. So, let’s say, less following or using a group of important users that we keep in touch regularly

The reality is you can’t possibly read 20 posts in 5 minutes so I can see the WordPress rule is of real value. I only comment on and like posts that I have read and felt worthy of a like or comment. Be true to the spirit of WordPress and the authors. Anything less although appearing helpful is just vanity.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you Roland. Yes, I think WordPress has somehow a valid rule. So, a like or comment should be only given to a worthy post…

I have few followers and I also don’t follow a lot of people now because I am still trying to build.
So I get to read post of people I follow frequently and like and comment as and when I enjoy the piece.
With people who comment on my posts too, I get to send them a reply as soon as Possible because it’s not much.

Thank you Nana, I’m not sure about replying to comments on our own blogs. So, less following is helping you in reading most posts

When I have 65 posts in my email list to read and about 2 hours of down time a day there are definitely going to be times I can’t read them all. However, I’d still like to support my friends and fellow bloggers by being able to Like their posts. If I can’t I feel like I’m abandoning them. So no, I don’t think you should be zapped for hitting some Likes.

When I have a dear friend as you Jess that I trust her writings yet I can’t keep up with all her updates, I’m willing to comment on one post and likes the others to show her that I’m here. Unless, I’m sure that she doesn’t like it this way… I think WordPress should consider this in some way with mutual friends

Works for me Mohamad! I know you’re there for me even if you can’t comment on every single post! ☺️

It is a tough one for sure but unless they are writing two sentence twitter like tweets, I don’t know how I could read that fast.

Thank you Mark. Very important point… Short posts should be treated differently

Ok, that’s how it works. I have discovered some days that after an x number of likes, it no longer works. Then I have to wait a while before I can continue to like posts;)

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Tack, Annica. Yes, it supposed to be activated back soon in few hours. So, I hope it has no big effect after all.

    I didn’t realise there was a limit!

This really gets me thinking because I posted about “liking” without reading a few weeks ago . A few people got a little offended and I felt bad. Too many times I’ll check email and it will say:

So and so liked your post 4:45
So and so liked your post 4:45
So and so liked your post 4:45
So and so liked your post 4:45
So and so liked your post 4:45

And it will come up like that 15 times, sometimes more. Since I posted about it, those people don’t like my stuff at all anymore. So, I lost a few followers. I should’ve never done it, because I know it’s hard to read all posts between Goodreads, WordPress, Twitter, plus have time to read the books I need to. I find myself scanning all the time, but I’ve never deliberately clicked on a group of posts all at one time, which obviously means the person didn’t read a single one. I appreciate the likes either way, but it’s a bittersweet feeling because all that work, but not any real interest.

I’m to the point now where I realize that reading every post is difficult. It’s simply impossible for some.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

I understand your point, Mischenko. Let’s say that we appreciate the likes but liking without reading is a some kind of disrespect! However, I’m concerned about that you’re receiving notifications of likes through emails! With comments and following notifications, the emails number is going to be crazy

      1. Mischenko Avatar

It has become quite crazy, Mohamad. At first, it was manageable. Now, it’s getting more difficult. The people that have done this to me have liked like 15 posts at a time in one minute. I truly appreciate the likes, it’s just a bittersweet feeling when you know that the person liking doesn’t really have an interest in your blog at all because they come back and do it all over again a week later. I really don’t know what’s right and would never want to complain about getting “likes.” It’s just difficult to keep up and I understand that.

Thanks for posting about this. I’m enjoying everyone’s outlook on it, including yours! 😉

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

I really feel your pain. It’s very bad. However, I don’t know if this will make it easy for you; I apologize if not: You may look at it from different angle. That’s, those have no interest in your blog. Rather they have interest in your likes. You are still winning (technically, likes have no effect at all). After all, they will stop recording likes once they notice that you are not liking theirs. I remember once when I posted a link on Facebook asking my friends and family to give me some opinion. I received tens of likes and no answer at all. I had to send them individually requesting the answer. Liking on social media is becoming a lifestyle and dominant habit

      3. Mischenko Avatar

Exactly, I totally agree. Do you think it’s something bloggers just shouldn’t concern themselves with? I try not to look at it as getting likes, but it seems to be how everything works. Do bloggers feel more successful when getting more likes? I think that was my mindset when I first got started. I think my mindset has become much more positive and I’m in a better place with it now. 🙂

      4. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Likes have no direct effect. I think of: Reminding you that I’m here – so please visit my site or please note that I have viewed your post. I might have read your post and enjoyed it. You will never know! Some argue that more likes could bring your post to the top in WordPress search results but I have no clue. The good think about this post is that we understand how others think so we can respect their needs and expectations. I believe this will lead for better results…

well, I have to say there is no way I can read 20 post in 5 minutes. I look thru titles and see what catches my attention first then read those and come back later on for the rest.

    1. superwifeandmummy Avatar

Absolutely. And I have to remove all guilt and “feeling bad” about not getting to some posts because at the end of the day, we all have obligations beyond blogging and I think on some level everyone (*decent) here understands that. If I like a post a week or two after it was published- it doesn’t change anything; I still like it and will more likely comment when I have more time. I feel no level of indignation if followers don’t “like” something as soon as I publish it . The world is a busy place 😉 We all support each other here as best we can

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Good point, Maria. I liked the idea that timing of a like isn’t much important.

      3. superwifeandmummy Avatar

Exactly. How does it change that I like what you wrote? I can still like it days later, even weeks. We shouldn’t get all “facebooky ” and touchy. We’re writers not moody adolescents!
Thanks for replying and for writing this post – I think you really got everyone to put their thinking caps on!

      4. superwifeandmummy Avatar

I did , yes . Really interesting results!

    2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you, Lourdes. Title also attracts me. I believe it’s very important factor in driving the traffic.

  10. GP Cox Avatar

In 5 minutes? Not me. I read pretty quickly [not an actual speed-reader], but it takes me hours to get to all the posts I want to read.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

When I find a comment from you, GP Cox, I know that my post is successful 😉
So, even fast reading won’t help unless the post is really a short one. Even though, there should be a selection of the posts that are going to be read.
