Rediscovering Qatar 2022: Forgotten World Cup Memories from Doha

While cleaning up my digital storage recently, I came across something I had completely forgotten about: Hundreds of video clips I recorded during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Most of them had never been shared and had simply sat there for years.

As I started going through the footage, I realized it captured much more than football. It brought back memories of the atmosphere in the streets, fans from around the world, and the unique energy that filled Doha during those weeks.

What started as a simple storage cleanup quickly turned into a new personal project: transforming these forgotten clips into short films.

Finding the Story in Reverse

Most video projects begin with a storyboard, script, and shooting plan. Scenes are carefully selected, while a production team coordinates everything behind the camera. Here, the process worked in reverse. The raw material already existed, and the challenge was uncovering the story hidden within it.

The clips are far from perfect and were often filmed without any intention of becoming part of a documentary or cinematic production. Yet that is probably what preserves their value: real, unfiltered memories of Doha during one of the most vibrant periods in Qatar.

The Films

Along the way, two short films emerged from the archive, each focusing on a different aspect of the experience.

  1. When the World Came to Doha

Take a look at the films above. I’d love to hear from you:

What do you usually do with the photos and videos you capture during major travels or historic events? Do you have a forgotten archive waiting to be rediscovered?

Thank you, Morgaine. After the World Cup America 2026, it was fun to see those again.

Thank you for the video, as I never went to Doha. I’m used to write a reportage of my journeys on a personal blog, where I add photos and videos. It’s nice to watch them again after some time
