Do you display ads on your blog?

WordAds Placements

Having good web traffic, you might want to sell ads on your blog or website. That’s, getting paid for displaying ads. While there are many options regarding web ads, the story with WordPress.com is a little different. If you’re not hosting on WordPress.com (up to premium plan), please refer to “Web Developing Issues” from my old post “How to leave Google” for some alternatives.

Now, let’s talk about WordPress.com…

Sell ads on your blog directly

Simple, effective, and it doesn’t affect performance of your site/blog. You can sell link advertising such as side banners or links/banners at the end of posts. Or, you can sell promotional or marketing posts such as reviewing products or services.

WordAds

WordAds is managed by WordPress itself. They are banners in header, sidebar, and below or in between posts. These positions vary from theme to theme, e.g., some themes don’t support top banners. Videos are another type of ads that are being served below or in between posts (I haven’t noticed any video ads lately). As a premium user, you have the option to hide those ads or to get paid for keeping them displayed. Upgrading to Business Plan, you have more tools to manipulate this.

Yet I believe that I optimized my WordPress to the max, PageSpeed Insights analysis shows a decrease of speed and thus performance when ads are on. The good news is that logged-in users may not notice this as they already have some components cached locally on their computers.

Google AdSense

My tests showed generally better performance scores when I used Google AdSense instead of WordAds. To use Adsense with WordPress.com, you have to be on their Business Plan.

The issue is that to comply with laws and privacy policies regarding advertising (and statistics), extra setups might be needed such as consent messages. Showing these messages involves extra scripts which affect the site’s performance negatively. While you can delay executions of scripts related to ads to enhance site’s speed, the revenue might be affected. In WordAds, these messages are part of the system and its effect is almost included.

Summary

Displaying third-parties ads is actually affecting the performance of the site. To minimize effects, avoid ads on homepage and on top of the pages. Further, use only one advertising system. If you’re able, use one unified consent messages system. Try to have the scripts at the footer of your pages; some might argue this is similar to deferring the script, but personally, it worked fine with Adsense/WordAds.

Should we scarify the ads’ revenue for better performance? And the important question is: Do you sell ads on your blog other than Google’s or the ones provided by WordPress? Let’s know.

If this resonated with you, let’s stay in touch. No spam.

Thank you for this informative post, Mohamad. Your site isn’t slow to upload! I’m hoping to upgrade to premium once I have more traffic. 🙂

It’s my pleasure, Mohamad. Yes I am getting more traffic! 🙂

I struggle with this ALL the time

I’m going to look into advertising a little as I’m already on Premium. 😉

I’m a premium user and tried ads for a while. They just made my blogs messy. I don’t like having zero control over the kinds of ads that appear. Plus I didn’t seem to be making much at. A few dollars each month. It’s just not worth it. I averaged about 5000 hits per month last year. This year it’s bumped up to 6000 per month. I’d rather have a cleaner site.

Wow, Kathleen. It is the killer point. No control over the content. I never thought of of this! I also agree regarding the messy display. I fixed a lot of display issues in ads on my site through CSS. I’ve searched a lot regarding the revenue of WordAds and seems isn’t that big amount. In my situation, if things went stable as it now, it will cover around 40% of the hosting costs! I might go with your way, cleaner site. Furthermore, I feel the ads are not changing a lot…

I write to help others and for enjoyment. In five months of ads I still hadn’t reached the minimum to receive payment. Not worth it.

I enjoy your site. I also understand your point. For me, I think I need 2 years to receive it 😀

Hey Mohamad AL Karbi, I love this post. I always feel like your either right on time or somehow you be in head at just the right time. I just launch my self hosting website (please follow that as I will be deleting the other) whatever guide you can give on that is also welcome. But back to the post, so now that I’m self hosting, I’m visiting the idea of ads and affiliation. I’m not sure I understand exactly what you mean by word ads and how that slow down the performance of you blog. I would want both to be at an reasonable level for my beauties and beaus.

Of course, I’ll be following your wonderful blog on the new platform. Congratulations, Jojo… And I’ll gladly offer you all possible help… Ok, things on self hosting (.org) is different. You have more options regarding ads – check my other post “How to leave Google”… Anyway, the best options/alternative for ads then is Google AdSense. Search for it and apply. Just make sure of their requirements first; mainly terms and privacy policy – check my terms page for your reference. The second option/alternative is WordAds from WordPress; I think there is a plugin for it. AdSense is more mature and has better performance for sure. So, it’s the preferred. The general rule is not to fill your site with ads for performance issues… Google provides good guidelines regarding AdSense

I hear Google adsense isn’t as profitable as other network are, is this true?

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Nothing is very profitable for small websites. Honestly, sites with higher visitors from USA and Canada get the bigger share. Besides, in small to mid websites, ads revenue is just a help for hosting costs… Anyway, you can tell about the results after few months of testing

Thank you, you have been a big help. Keep doing what your doing!

Just paused ads, wish I’d never added them, totally not worth it. They take too much space on a page and pay out pennies; especially when you’ve only just begun blogging. Thanks for info.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you, Liz. Another voice for disabling ads. I almost got the same attitude yet traffic to my site is increasing. Maybe after few months, things will be better.

      1. Liz Avatar

hmmm I don’t know. Will see.

Hi Mohamad, what about Amazon affililates?

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Amazon affiliate is very good. But the selling transaction should be completed to be considered! It’s not available on WP.com. But indirectly this can be overcomed through using the reference code in links.

      1. Liz Avatar

        Thank you sir.

      2. improvises Avatar

        I think that’s $40 a month

  8. improvises Avatar

I don’t have ads, maybe I received one photo when I first signed up. I felt if there were ads there would be more traffic. However, the loading time is sometimes slower, not by much but I thought it was my internet. I welcome ads on my page because it will promote businesses to help people.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Wow, that is new prospective of the way to look at ads. Thank you. I don’t think your site is slow. I think it’s because of your computer as you told me earlier. And yes, it doesn’t show ads till now. I hope soon it will – with the increased traffic 😉

  9. improvises Avatar

Mohamad, We are agreeing with you. We’ve got your back. Thanks for notifying wordpress because you have fantastic ideas, keep up the great work.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you very much. This means a lot to me having such wonderful people always supporting me 🙂

I’m not running ads right now as I’m not sure if I have enough traffic for it. I’m still learning as I go. I have a self hosted site so I’m assuming that’s why I’m not having this issue? My experience with WP so far has been positive so I would think they would listen to your feedback to resolve the issue. I’ll keep it in mind if I get enough traffic to run ads. Always a pleasure reading your posts!

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you and you’re always welcome, Cheryl. Yes, WP self hosted sites aren’t affected 😉 However, you still have the option to add WP WordAds plugin and/or Google AdSense. I totally agree – I’m very happy with the support and service they provide.
