Do you display ads on your blog?

WordAds Placements

Having good web traffic, you might want to sell ads on your blog or website. That’s, getting paid for displaying ads. While there are many options regarding web ads, the story with WordPress.com is a little different. If you’re not hosting on WordPress.com (up to premium plan), please refer to “Web Developing Issues” from my old post “How to leave Google” for some alternatives.

Now, let’s talk about WordPress.com…

Sell ads on your blog directly

Simple, effective, and it doesn’t affect performance of your site/blog. You can sell link advertising such as side banners or links/banners at the end of posts. Or, you can sell promotional or marketing posts such as reviewing products or services.

WordAds

WordAds is managed by WordPress itself. They are banners in header, sidebar, and below or in between posts. These positions vary from theme to theme, e.g., some themes don’t support top banners. Videos are another type of ads that are being served below or in between posts (I haven’t noticed any video ads lately). As a premium user, you have the option to hide those ads or to get paid for keeping them displayed. Upgrading to Business Plan, you have more tools to manipulate this.

Yet I believe that I optimized my WordPress to the max, PageSpeed Insights analysis shows a decrease of speed and thus performance when ads are on. The good news is that logged-in users may not notice this as they already have some components cached locally on their computers.

Google AdSense

My tests showed generally better performance scores when I used Google AdSense instead of WordAds. To use Adsense with WordPress.com, you have to be on their Business Plan.

The issue is that to comply with laws and privacy policies regarding advertising (and statistics), extra setups might be needed such as consent messages. Showing these messages involves extra scripts which affect the site’s performance negatively. While you can delay executions of scripts related to ads to enhance site’s speed, the revenue might be affected. In WordAds, these messages are part of the system and its effect is almost included.

Summary

Displaying third-parties ads is actually affecting the performance of the site. To minimize effects, avoid ads on homepage and on top of the pages. Further, use only one advertising system. If you’re able, use one unified consent messages system. Try to have the scripts at the footer of your pages; some might argue this is similar to deferring the script, but personally, it worked fine with Adsense/WordAds.

Should we scarify the ads’ revenue for better performance? And the important question is: Do you sell ads on your blog other than Google’s or the ones provided by WordPress? Let’s know.

If this resonated with you, let’s stay in touch. No spam.

I don’t think the ads revenue should be scrapped, I believe there is a way it should be optimized to accommodate both with better performance too. I’m a layman to this now mg it the at I understood you, Mr Mohamed, with your vast knowledge on the subject matter, you can compromise a better option.

Thank you for your kind words, my friend. I’m pretty sure that WordPress will solve this issue someway sometime. I wanted to encourage paid users to use WordAds so they generate some extra revenue; but at the same time, I’m saying that there are some consequences.

      1. larryifediba Avatar

Please enlighten me on the consequences involved. And I’ll also wish you be my guide when I finally launch mine.

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

No worries. I’ll gladly offer all possible help. So, please don’t hesitate contacting me any time. Now, for the consequences, I meant that displaying ads will slow the loading of the site. But is it really bad?

Hi, read all. Honestly without my technology experience don’t understand a word of it, but, know you’re spreading your experience which hopefully some day I too will understand.
True professional and also very knowledgeable.

I always blessed by your visit, Maureen. I’m sorry if the post was complicated a little bit. I was saying that if you’re a premium user on WordPress, displaying their ads on your blog will generate you some money. And thank you for your kind words

Hi Mohomad, Maureen (Mo) back only now. I’ve stopped blogging as you already have probably noticed.
You’re a marvellous gentleman obviously still working hard and giving out your wonderful advice.
Hope you’re keeping well and just getting back to wish you well and to let you know, all is good with me.
        Take care Mo

Maureen, I really missed you. Glad that despite that you’re not blogging, you’re still checking on us. Hope things are ok there? Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I am new to blogging, but think we should be allowed to have at least some ads, especially ones that are optimized. It would be nice to at least cover hosting fees.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you and welcome to the world of blogging. Yes, that is the point. We accept to show ads from WordPress so we get some compensation for the hosting & related fees. I should emphasize that WordAds are only allowed for paid users. Free users will have ads displayed but they won’t get paid for that.

Mohamad, I haven’t noticed any change in loading your page. How come you have to use all the ads? That’s absurd. My case is different because WordPress.com is not my host anymore. I’ve been thinking of using Google Adsense in the future, but I’ll check your previous blog posts before I do anything. 🙂

    1. Renata Fernandes Avatar

Btw, I’ve just accessed your page and the top ad took a while to load, but didn’t influence the speed of the rest of the page.

    2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Yes, Renata. On Twenty Twelve theme, WordsAds are displaying in between posts. Previously, I had another option, as a premium user, to show extra ads on top or sidebar. This option has been cancelled. Now, it shows ads in between, in header, and on sidebar – all together!
Thank you for your confirmation regarding the speed. I believe WordAds are programmed to defer loading until after main site’s components (JavaScript). So, theoretically, it’s not supposed to affect the speed. However, I still believe that this isn’t case in their Video Ads.

Google AdSense is the best choice for sure. But it’s not available on WordPress.com. I used to have it for few years on my other sites. It’s not difficult to be accepted. Just make sure to have some terms and privacy rules listed on your site. Check my terms for your reference.

      1. Renata Fernandes Avatar

Hmmm I’ll check them out. Now I’m using WordPress.org.

  5. Jessica Bakkers Avatar

I don’t really understand any of this. Do you mean you get paid to have ads on your site??

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Oh, Jess. I’m really sorry that my post was a little bit in a mess. Sometimes, I write supposing that everyone is sitting there inside my brain and knows what I’m talking about… I’ve just done some revisions…
Yes, that is my point. Because I’m a premium WordPress user, I’m being paid for showing WordPress ads on my site. I’m afraid this makes my site slow for visitors. But at the same time, it generates good amount of money.

      1. Jessica Bakkers Avatar

No, it was nothing wrong with your post, just me being a noob to WP still!! 😉

I too used YouTube and tried to Show ads on my page but its been days only the yellow box shows but no ads.(if you see at the end of my posts).

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

I believe a specific rate of traffic is required to start showing ads on your WP blog (whether it is free or premium). I think the video ads are showing when rate of traffic is increasing even more.
Now, the important point here is that your blog isn’t .org. You’re WordPress.com user! If I’m not mistaken, you have posted the Google AdSense JS code into a text widget. Unfortunately, WordPress.com doesn’t support Google AdSense. This is why you got the yellow box.

      1. AloyFernBlogs Avatar

In order to make my blog .org what should I do ?

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

.org is more work and time managing your site. Unless there is a real need for moving, I don’t prefer it. You may check my article “WordPress .COM vs .ORG” for more details

Good luck. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance

Mohamad I did not notice any change in your page.
Your post apart of being informative(thank you) made me question : what is called a good traffic on the page?
How do I know when is time to display ads?
I have noticed that recently , at the end of the page it is displayed this message:
“Occasionally, some of your visitors may see an advertisement here
You can hide these ads completely by upgrading to one of our paid plans”

Does this mean that I can upgrade to premium and display ads?

    Thanks a lot🙂

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you very much Albina. I don’t have direct answer for the definition of good traffic. But I noticed that ads on my blog have been changed (now it’s showing video ads) when I exceeded the 100 unique visitors per day. Thus, statistics (whether provided by WordPress or by Google Analytics) are the main indicator for you. My suggestion is to show ads and study the revenue. Low revenue might be an indication of low traffic.

Yes, that is the point here. As a free WordPress user, WP will display ads on your blog (based on your traffic). Becoming premium, you’ll have the option to hide those ads or to be paid for keeping them displayed.

I haven’t noticed slowness due to ads on your site or others that I follow. I don’t have ads on my site – probably due to not enough traffic. Interesting post, Mohamad. I learn more from you than I do from WordPress.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Thank you for your kind words. I always love your comments and feel very happy when I see them here, Franci. I believe you are a paid user. The default settings thus is to hide ads.

  9. kirizar Avatar

I haven’t really noticed the ads on your site or really, any WordPress site. I’ve seen the square at the bottom of the post where it says something like “Viewers might be seeing advertising here.” I think I’ve learned to look past the ads for the most part. Like they are the floater in my eye–annoying but not debilitating. There are some sites I simply close down so I never have to wait for the myriad crap to upload though. If WordPress got like that, I’d have to think of paying for the upgrade. That, or quit blogging.

    1. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

Wow, I really like this. Thanks God that WordPress is doing it reasonably. First, they defer the loading of ads to the end (mostly). Second, ads on free blogs are minimum and not bothering until they got high traffic; that’s, becoming famous blogs. Upon which, the free user will consider upgrading for sure. A blogger with wonderful posts as you should not quit blogging…

      1. kirizar Avatar

That is very kind of you to say. It’s hard to know for sure. The sound of one’s own voice starts to get monotonous after a while. Unless you are a narcissist, of course. So, maybe I’m only in danger if I start to believe I’m too good. (I think the lack of large ads suggests otherwise, though 😏

      2. Mohamad Al Karbi Avatar

The “monotonous” word! I used to think about this a lot in different aspects of life. But I noticed that a lot of people around me are monotonous and sometimes they repeat the same stories a lot. However, they are still beloved and listened to. Don’t give this a lot of thinking… You’re good… 😉
