CurteaDeArges Monastery

Romania is my country and the sweet hills covered in vineyards are my home place.

I have yet to find more beauty in the world as to measure the balmy vineyards in the shade of moonlit evenings.

Here, in Romania, Beauty follows you everywhere. When you think youโ€™ve lost it, itโ€™s there breathing magic on your neck, tugging at your sleeve with gorgeous sunsets, misty mountains, bluish lakes, Shire-like emerald hills, fortresses that once kept invaders at bayโ€ฆ

Romania is like its people. Beaming with startling beauty and when you think youโ€™ve had it all and seen it all, there appears another corner of mesmerizing one-of-a-kind piece of marvelโ€ฆ A patriarchal silence clings to all, the same silence of the world being born. Nothing to be heard, only the silent song of the fields, trees, hills, mountains, lakes, rivers and waterfalls.

Life is like a foreign country. โ€œLiterature is the operating instructions. The best manual we have. The most useful guide to the country weโ€™re visiting, life.โ€- Ursula K. Le Guin

In my country, the most useful guide is our folklore. Here, stories emerge from under each stone or any trail in the mountains as mediators between the ideal and the real. The land is teeming with legends, the one depicting the magnificence of Curtea De Arges Monastery epitomizes the sacrifice that must be done for building something of lasting beauty, so as to cut out your heart and lay it as foundation.

I illustrate with a stunning movie about my country, showing Romania as it is: fresh, sophisticated, rough, ancient, modern, mesmerizing, wild, mysterious โ€ฆ in one word, AMAZING:

There’s no spot of land more beautiful or welcoming than the land of your birth.

I have never been to Romania (except for embassy in the US for a reception) but I always wanted to go. Everyone I have met from Romania has been pleasant. Sounds like the country is beautiful like it’s people.

As someone who is completely in love with Romania I enjoyed this post very much; also, I’m always excited to see Romanians writing in English (I taught it there for several years). I was lucky enough to live in Romania for 11.1/2 years and although I returned to the UK 13 years ago now I brought a few bits of Romania back with me, including a wife, and I’ve been back most years since. I see some of the comments are from people who have never been. I just say GO! But don’t confine your visit to the major cities and tourist spots, great as they are. Go north, to the Bucovina, my favourite place.

Thank you for your beautiful words! Indeed, living here is an interesting never cease-to-amaze experience, that will follow you everywhere ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, Bucovina is wonderful and a must! I should mention also the Danube Delta.

The Danuble Delta is the only place in Romania I have not been. Why? Mosquitoes. After being eaten alive camping in Budapest (on the way to Romania!) I always avoided it. I really should remedy that but it would mean a winter visit I think. Other than that, teaching English (and computers/internet before Windows) to both teachers and students took me to schools all over Romania. I just loved it. I came for six months, ended up staying about 140! Two years ago we came and toured Transylvania in our 42 year old VW camper, including Transalpina, basing ourselves for two weeks in Saliste with a lovely couple, Iulian and Alexandra Parau who run Camping Saliste (small but highly recommended). Last year we again based ourselves in Saliste for a fortnight but hired a car and ‘did’ Fagarasanul. On both occasions we spent another couple of weeks in Bucovina where I have many friends among the egg decorators.
I have been confused by finding your post through Mohamad Al Karbi’s site but have now found your ‘business’ site. Do you have a ‘personal’ one?

      2. Iulia Halatz Avatar

A thing we have in common ๐Ÿ™‚ I have never been either because of the mosquitoes. But people tell enchanting stories about the Dabube Delta, so I should fight fear with fire ๐Ÿ™‚ I mean repellant…or to burn coffee as I have seen done in Greece. I can see you have a lot of exciting stories to tell, too. I have been camping on various occasions, one of them made memorable by the visit of a bear, under the spell of the smell of our food.Pleasurable memory now…:)
Well, I have 3 business sites, but this is where I play with words: https://blogdecompanie.wordpress.com/. Up close personal and professional ๐Ÿ™‚ I am very happy and honored to have met you.
