Visit Morecambe!

The immediate advantage of living in Morecambe is the glorious sea air which is much cleaner and fresher than the city streets clogged with petrol fumes.

It is so pleasant to live where the bay is just round the corner and down the road!

The different boats which you can see sailing on the bay make it very much the world of Arthur Ransome, who is one of the subjects of my blog Arthur and Oscar on https://annegaelan16.blog/  Somewhat significantly a new fishing shop has just opened here – a great author link!

What makes Morecambe special are its events unique to the town, such as the Cross Bay Walk, when members of the community raise money for the St John’s Hospice by doing a sponsored walk across the bay starting from Arnside. The Queen’s guide Cedric Robinson takes everyone across. The next on Saturday 12th May is for Age UK.

For me, the area where I live, Bare Village, deserves a mention. It is a small, active community which works hard to make it an attractive place to live and visit.

There is a well-stocked local newsagent’s a post office, two cafes, a baker’s, butcher’s, a hair and beauty salon, flower shops, a hairdresser’s, a small food store and a new wine bar for those who like quiet surroundings rather than a pub. The latter is well worth dropping in. Visitors have the option to sit outside in the tiny Beer Garden!

Bare also has its own small and even better free pool which is just natural sea water on the shore itself, just opposite the village and facing the promenade.

If you head down Princes Crescent to the promenade, then turn right to Happy Mount Park, visitors will find a cafe with a play centre, a playground with swings, a cute Japanese garden in which is a pond with all kinds of wildlife around it and even a miniature woodland walk. It is a delight and I always find a sense of peace going there, though it is familiar territory.

Other attractions are crazy golf, an amazing splash park and a miniature train which hoots and goes under a dark tunnel in a circle.

This park’s advantage is that it is great for parents with very small children.

Further away is Poulton Village, where you can buy and enjoy Morecambe Bay shrimps.

The main place for entertainment in Morecambe is The Platform, a former railway station with a very old-world feel about it. The President of the Oscar Wilde Society Gyles Brandreth will be one of the star attractions there this July when there will also be the annual kite festival.

The most amazing designs appear and float around the beach. It’s really fun!
Nearby is the Midland Hotel, which has been totally refurbished and now exudes an air of 1930s Art Deco glamour, while serving lunches to die for in funky, artistic and colourful surroundings.

They also offer the option to dine facing views across the bay, which are divine on a sunny day.

It is a place Oscar Wilde would surely have been at home in!

Meanwhile, Reel Cinema shows popular mainstream films plus opera, ballet or national theatre on screen. The staff there are really nice as well as honest.

I definitely recommend a visit to Morecambe.
